Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages was set up by provison to Section 146 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1958 to foster and coordinate activities in the spheres of letters and languages, visual and plastic arts, music, dance and drama and of culture generally, in the State of Jammu and Kashmir and to promote through them all the cultural unity of the State, and of the State with the other states of the country.
The Academy was declared an Autonomous Corporate Body vide SRO 340 of 1963. The Academy has been assigned the role of Sahitya Akademy (Akademi of Letters), Sangeet Natak Akademi (Akademi of Music, Dance and Drama) and Lalit Kala Akademi (Akademi of Arts) to provide integrated approach and inter disciplinary cooperation and coordination between the three wings under one authority.
